I notice I am able to understand people as I walk down the street, my pronunciation and grammar are much better and I have more confidence. I don’t have to stop and think about each word then fit together like a puzzle. I am now thinking in phrases and putting the phrases together. This method of learning is working for me, and I plan to continue taking classes at Portugues Carioca until I finish all the levels.” I enjoy going to class each day.You have a great program with Portugues Carioca!
Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced
The Elementary course – It will introduce students to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. On this level students will master essential grammar structures, pronunciation, basic vocabulary and phrases. Conversation will emphasize the development of vocabulary and Portuguese grammar skills necessary for basic conversation (including telephone calls, shopping, daily routine, family, job, etc.). Already on this level our students learn how to ask and answer questions using 4 verbal tenses in the indicative mood of verbs ended in -AR simultaneously in one lesson! Here are they: simple present, simple past, present continuous and going to – future. After finishing this course students can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases and interact in a simple way.
The Pre-Intermediate course – It will further develop vocabulary, and introduce students to more complex sentence structure and higher level grammatical skills focusing on speaking. The main objective of this course is to enhance the students’ abilities to converse on a variety of topics such as restaurant, parts of the body, transportation, directions, city, weather, etc. On this level, students will learn again 4 verbal tenses also in the indicative mood simultaneously in one lesson as on the previous level, but with verbs end in -ER and -IR. Besides that, they will learn prepositions and prepositional phrases. At the end of this level students will be able to converse in daily situations out of the class by using the structures learned in class.
The Intermediate course – The main objective of this course is to enhance the students’ abilities to converse freely on a variety of topics such as work, travelling, study, leisure time, etc. Students will concentrate on speaking freely, reading and listening. This is the most difficult level at Português Carioca due to the amount of grammar structures involving different verbal tenses, such as the imperfect and the subjunctive mood(the most difficult verbal tense for students to understand). Students also learn parts of a sentence, connectives, etc. At the end of this course students will be able to hold a conversation in various situations outside the classroom as well as construct long sentences using more complex words and grammar.
The Advanced course – On this level it’s assumed that students have achieved all the basic as well as the more complex grammatical skills, and are able to use language in a wider cultural context. Advanced students can understand the main ideas of complex texts on different topics and can communicate on a variety of more complex topics such as personality, communication and media, culture, etc. They learn passive voice, direct and indirect speech, etc. After finishing this course students will be able to speak Portuguese fluently in all kinds of situations. We encourage students to practice Portuguese as much as they can in order to improve the learned language skills, as for the process of learning a language be complete, it is necessary to practise it continuously.
I am a Californian and on my second trip to Brazil I sought out Portuguese classes because I wanted to understand and speak with my friends that live here in Rio. During this trip I had an apartment in Copacabana so I chose to take a cab to class everyday which intimidated me because I could not converse very well with the cab driver and would usually just tell the individual, “sorry, but I don’t speak Portuguese”. By the third day of class I was able to piece together what the cab driver was saying and by the end of the week I could respond! All of the staff at Portuguese Carioca were warm, enthusiastic, and helpful. My survival course teacher Roberta is a gifted individual, she made the class fun and challenging.I am a Californian and on my second trip to Brazil I sought out Portuguese classes because I wanted to understand and speak with my friends that live here in Rio. Portugues Carioca is in a class by itself… I remember that first day, sitting there thinking “how is she getting me to say all of this when I don’t speak any Portuguese yet?!” But it’s just building block on building block – starting with the basics and adding on. The methodology focuses on teaching structures that are immediately useful and can be formulated into useful sentences throughout the day. In other language classes, the instructor would explain things (when to use certain verbs, for example) so the ‘work’ was to learn what those different scenarios were. In Marcia’s class, we learn how to use the correct verbs through speaking. Then, when I am on the street, on the phone or in a cab, the correct words come out because I have already said them many times in many different ways in the class. Here’s what the class is not: passive! We are very engaged for every second of the class; I really feel like I get my money’s worth. We spend the entire 75 minutes formulating sentences and questions and responses, all the while drilling the pronunciation…
I am an expat and I attended a two-weeks Survival course as soon as I arrived in Rio because I wanted to feel myself more confident on my daily activities around the city. After the first week I realised that I was able to ask for medications at the local pharmacy, ordering simple food at the restaurant, giving correct indications at the taxi driver: that’s was exactly what I was looking for!!
Lessons are focused on speaking (and speaking and speaking!!) and let me say that this is really funny, involving and effective! You do learn with a very good pace accelerating day by day. The enthusiasm of our teacher Roberta is contagious and genuine Carioca, Marcia and Mari welcome you with their smile every day and they all speak English too: this is essential when you approach the school for the first time.
I will definitely undertake the Elementary course too!!
A big “thank you” to all the staff!!
I love the survival course, it really gave my Português as a newcomer in Rio a kick start. To my surprise In just one week I felt I could to some what degree survive in the streets of Rio! The course is very Intensiv and challenging, but the teachers are really professional and awesome. They make it so fun and to the point with their teaching method . They make you feel that it is so easy to learn Carioca. Now I eat, dream and breath Carioca. If you should take one class in Português, this is it!
